FIREBRICK MUSEUM
For over a century, the fire brick industry was the primary economic engine of Audrain County with peak employment exceeding 5,000 and payrolls supporting four genrations of families. The industry was the driving force of social change in the county and area. On April 12, 2007, ground was broken for the Audrain County Firebrick Museum scheduled to open in 2008. FIRE BRICK MUSEUM UPDATE
March 2007
I’m pleased to report our fund raising campaign has exceeded the original goal of $150,000! Cash contributions continue to be received and are presently $157,385.65 along with pledges totaling $20,750.00 and ‘in-kind’ contributions of $945.00. These bring the campaign total to $179,080.65. We have received 355 contributions and pledges including 274 contributors to the Memory Brick Walk which is very gratifying.
The Peckham & Wright architect firm has completed the design drawings and met with contractors on March 5, 2007. We are presently waiting for the contractor bids and schedules which will bring our fundraising efforts into sharp focus (are we fine or do we need a little additional effort?). We would continue to expect construction to begin in the 2nd or 3rd quarter of 2007 but we will see as the work must be scheduled in conjunction with this summer’s “History Camp” and this fall’s “A Walk Back in Time”.
Thanks to the hundreds of contributors and dozens of volunteers who continue to work with fundraising and display/exhibit plans for the Fire Brick Museum. Special thanks to the Allen P. and Josephine B. Green Foundation for their support of and encouragement for the Museum which began with initial planning in 2003.
